IN-PERSON: Forensic Audio Fundamentals – Hear and How: Kansas City, MO

Forensic Audio Fundamentals: Hear & How is a 5 day hands-on class that will introduce the principles of recorded sound, basic processing techniques, and best practices for working with, and clarifying digital audio.

OVERVIEW:  Students will learn how to improve audio recording issues with currently available software tools, including an in depth review of the iZotope RX software features and processes.  Attendees will also receive information on forensic audio reference resources.

Students will learn through lecture and hands-on exercises, to identify, and address common audio issues using currently available tools. Multiple hands-on exercises will be included during each module.

Class beings each day at 0800.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Anyone performing audio analysis or wanting to learn.  No previous experience necessary.  Class size is limited to 24 students.

WHO CAN APPLY?  LEVA membership is NOT required. No academic pre-requisites.

NOTE: Basic computer skills are required to complete this training. Students must provide own laptop with admin rights (to load demo software) and one the following operating systems:

COURSE INSTRUCTOR: Allen Combs is LEVA Certified Forensic Video Analyst and chief forensic analyst for Combs Forensic Services. He has completed hundreds of forensic audio, video, and image investigations for criminal and civil cases in the United States and abroad. Allen provides forensic audio and video training to top law enforcement agencies, foreign governments, and public and private sector forensic specialists from all over the world. Allen also serves as a technical assessor for the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation, has provided consultation to several media outlets, and is an active member of multiple professional industry organizations.

CREDITS / CERTIFICATE: This course provides 40 credit hours toward LEVA Certification. LEVA will also issue a certificate to each student who completes the course.

TUITION:  $1000

NOTE: Registering serves as a placeholder only. Once the registration is vetted, tuition payment secures the seat.

Unless otherwise arranged with LEVA, students accepted to attend must pay the course fee by March 4, 2022. Payment options are wire transfer, cheque or online for credit/purchase card (Visa, Mastercard and American Express only).

Travel & Accommodation:

Students are responsible for securing their own lodging and all ground transportation to / from the airport and between the hotel and class each day.


Nearest major airport: Kansas City (MCI): 20 minutes from hotels and training site.

Distance between the recommended hotels and training site: 10 minutes

Parking is free at the hotels and training academy.


The course will end by 3:30 P.M. on that Friday. Students should avoid scheduling a flight out Friday evening before 6:30 P.M.


Breakfast is included in the hotel rate. Other meals are the responsibility of the student.

REFUND POLICY: With the exception of war, government regulation, disaster, strikes or exigent circumstances, a refund will be approved minus a US$25 service charge. As an alternative, a student who must cancel may apply the full amount as a credit to a future LEVA class.
